Breast cancer can be cured if diagnosed and treated early

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women. Sadly, it is also a leading cause of death among women even though it is the cancer that can be most successfully treated. This means the remission rate of breast cancer after treatment is very high.

Most cancers are tough to detect, but breast cancer can be easily detected. You just have to take some time to examine your breast regularly. There are also some easily recognizable signs and symptoms that will give you a hint that you may have breast cancer.

Symptoms of breast cancer:
• A lump in the breast or under your arm
• Changes in breast shape or size
• Dimpling of skin or change in breast texture
• Discharge from the nipple
• Pain or discomfort in your breast
• Redness/ flaking/ crusting/ pulling in of the nipple area

If you have any of these symptoms, you should get a medical check up immediately. You will need a biopsy to diagnose breast cancer. With immediate surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of these therapies you have a very good chance of beating breast cancer.

Risk factor of breast cancer
There are two types of risk factors that increase your chances of getting breast cancer.

Risk factors that cannot be changed:
These are factors beyond your control and include getting older, genetic conditions, early puberty and late menopause, denser breasts, family history of breast or ovarian cancer, breast diseases, exposure to certain drugs and previous radiation therapies. If you have any of these risk factors, you should get a regular check-up.

Risk factors that can be changed
Sedentary lifestyle, obesity, hormone therapies, first pregnancy over age of 30, not breast feeding, smoking and alcohol consumption are some of the risk factors that you can control. Making the necessary changes to your lifestyle will help you reduce the risk of breast cancer.

How to detect breast cancer early
If you have a family history or breast cancer, then you should be very vigilant.
Don’t miss your breast self-examination.
Talk to your doctor about your family history and schedule a regular check up from an early age.
Get a mammogram once a year. It is the best way to detect lumps that are too small to be detected with a self-exam.
Exercise regularly and get enough sleep.
Adopt a healthy diet and watch your weight.
